PRECISION LIGHTING FOR PRECISION SCIENCE: HYTRONIK CONTROL AT THERMO FISHER, BY LOW ENERGY DESIGNS

Low Energy Designs led a full lighting retrofit for Thermo Fisher’s laboratory, integrating Hytronik control technology to meet extreme requirements in precision, efficiency, and UV safety.

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a global leader in scientific research services, faced a highly technical challenge at their Horsham facility: replacing a lighting system with amber filters that protected UV-sensitive products, but caused heat build-up, frequent failures, and poor visual conditions.

To solve it, they turned to Low Energy Designs, who engineered a custom LED luminaire with fully integrated control.

The key? Combining advanced LED technology with Hytronik’s smart control solution, capable of increasing light levels, optimising energy use, and ensuring strict compliance with UV safety standards.

This wasn’t just a retrofit—it was a precision operation. And Hytronik control was the scalpel.

THE CHALLENGE

Replace amber-filtered LED battens, which caused heat build-up and high failure rates.

Increase lighting levels by 40%, achieving 800–1200 lux without compromising UV safety.

Enhance CRI and colour temperature, essential for precise scientific tasks.

Strictly limit UV exposure, ruling out standard lighting solutions.

Avoid energy waste in low-occupancy areas, with per-luminaire intelligent control.

Deploy an integrated, reliable and autonomous control system that could fit seamlessly into custom luminaires—without increasing wiring complexity or requiring centralised infrastructure.

THE SOLUTION

1. Hytronik control at the core

Each Low Energy Designs LumiROD luminaire was fitted with Hytronik’s HED1080 driver—a multifunctional unit with DALI, 1-10V, Switch-Dim and RF wireless control. Its compact architecture enabled all control logic to be embedded directly within the luminaire, eliminating the need for extra wiring or external systems.

Paired with the SAM7 HF sensor head, each luminaire detects presence and adjusts light output automatically with three-level dimming.

2. Autonomous, efficient operation

The SAM7 sensor enables each luminaire to react in real-time to occupancy. When no one is present, lights dim or switch off entirely—maximising savings without compromising safety or comfort.

3. Seamless installation, zero disruption

Thanks to Hytronik’s all-in-one solution, installation was fast and straightforward. It was completed over two weekends without affecting production and passed all on-site quality tests.
