Modern Lighting System for NSCG T-Level Centre

Hytronik implemented an advanced lighting control system for the NSCG T-Level Centre and Sports Hall, a state-of-the-art educational facility located in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England.

The project, valued at £1.5 million, was developed by Spellar Metcalfe, with design, electrical, and mechanical services provided by Drayton Beaumont Building, who collaborated with Hytronik to deliver innovative lighting control solutions.

Spanning 1,900 square metres, the T-Level Centre includes classrooms, a four-court sports hall, and breakout spaces, offering a dynamic and functional environment for students and staff.

THE CHALLENGE

Automation and flexibility: The system needed to seamlessly adapt to diverse zones, including classrooms, circulation areas, and sports facilities, while providing tailored control for specific functionalities.

Energy efficiency: Meeting sustainability goals by incorporating advanced features that optimise energy consumption and reduce operational costs.

Ease of use and maintenance: Ensuring a straightforward, user-friendly system with minimal downtime for adjustments or repairs, avoiding the complexity of traditional setups.

Integration of technologies: Successfully combining the DALI system with Bluetooth Mesh wireless control to enhance functionality and connectivity.

Efficient installation: Minimising wiring complexity and installation time to streamline the deployment process.

THE SOLUTION

• Microwave sensors + Bluetooth control bodies for entry and circulation areas

- Automatically control luminaires in high-traffic areas such as the foyer and hallways, adjusting light levels based on occupancy and natural light.

- Enabled advanced configuration through the Koolmesh App, including daylight harvesting and tri-level dimming.

• PIR ON/OFF sensors for stair cores

- Ensured lights in staircases were activated only when movement was detected and turned off automatically when no activity was present, optimising energy use.

• PIR Bluetooth sensors with circadian rhythm and DALI output for double-height and mezzanine areas

- Enabled dynamic lighting control in large, open spaces, adjusting light levels via the Koolmesh App to enhance user experience and respect the circadian rhythm.

- Also simplified installation by eliminating the need for extensive wiring.

• PIR Bluetooth motion sensor with DALI for classrooms and breakout spaces

- Provided lighting tailored to educational and collaborative activities in classrooms and common areas. -- Managed multiple luminaires with automatic adjustments based on occupancy and ambient light.

• Quick connection boxes to simplify classroom wiring

- Simplified and accelerated electrical installations in classrooms, enabling modular and secure connections for DALI luminaires and sensors.

- The "Plug-and-Play" design reduced installation time and facilitated future system modifications.

• PIR Bluetooth sensors with DALI – Dual-channel control for mezzanine classrooms

- Managed two groups of luminaires independently, adapting lighting to different zones and activities within mezzanine classrooms.

- Allowed for more precise and efficient energy use in shared spaces.

RESULTS ACHIEVED

For Administrators:

• Reduced operational costs: Thanks to features like daylight harvesting and automatic shutdown in unoccupied areas, the system optimised energy consumption, lowering electricity bills.

• Scalable solution: Allowed the incorporation of new luminaires or adaptation to changes in space usage without significant future investments.

• Simplified monitoring: Via the Koolmesh App, enabling quick adjustments and reducing dependence on external support.

For Educators:

• Improved classroom functionality: Adaptive lighting allowed smooth transitions between individual, collaborative, and group presentation activities.

• Easy controls: Push-to-make switches provided a straightforward tool for real-time lighting customisation.

• Comfort and focus: Spaces with circadian rhythm lighting fostered comfort and concentration for both educators and students.

For Students:

• Comfortable learning environments: Lighting automatically adjusted to prevent glare and ensure optimal light levels for learning.

• Enhanced safety: Well-lit circulation and staircase areas promoted a secure and welcoming environment.
