Tennis court led lighting upgrade with smart control

The Hytronik team participated in the retrofit project for the lighting system at West Hants Club in Bournemouth, UK, by implementing a control system for the new LED lights in the sports complex.

In this project, the Low Energy Designs team replaced 128 fluorescent 240W lights in the tennis hall with LED lights. This, along with the control system, resulted in significant improvements in energy efficiency and user experience

The Challenge

The West Hants Club needed a lighting control solution that:

Met Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) criteria: Ensuring proper light levels for high-level tennis courts.

Optimized energy consumption: Efficient control to reduce costs and leverage natural light.

Simplified management: A user-friendly system with quick adjustments via an app and local manual control.

Offered flexibility: Dynamic lighting adjustments based on usage, from training sessions to tournaments.

The Solution

1. Bluetooth repeater: Installed on each court, providing the foundation for a stable and accurate control network.

This device maintains real-time synchronization, even during power outages, ensuring the continuity of the lighting system.

2. Low Energy's new LED luminaires were equipped with Bluetooth controllers.

These controllers manage the on/off functions and brightness adjustments of each light precisely and in real time.
This flexible control allows the lighting to adapt to the specific needs of the club and the playing conditions.
Additionally, the controllers ensure that lights are only used when necessary, preventing premature wear.

3. Wireless, self-powered wall switches based on EnOcean technology were installed for greater flexibility (no cables or batteries needed).

These switches allow for quick manual control without depending on the central system, offering flexibility and ease of use in scenarios where immediate adjustments are needed.

4.Tennis court lighting at West Hants Club is now managed through the Koolmesh app.

Both employees and players can:

Control lighting scenes with the Koolmesh app: They can select pre-set scenes like 50% or 100% brightness, depending on the activity—whether it's practice or an evening match.
Automatic dimming and switching: The LED lights are fully customizable, allowing for smooth dimming and instant switching between different lighting modes. This is especially useful for transitioning between scenarios like "cleaning mode" or active play.

Real-world results: Enhancing the experience and saving energy

The implementation of Hytronik’s lighting control system with Koolmesh App delivered tangible results:

Improved player experience: Players now enjoy perfect visibility on the court with reduced glare, helping them focus on their technique.

Energy savings: Customizable lighting scenes reduce energy consumption and extend the life of the LED lights, leading to lower electricity bills.

Operational efficiency: Staff can manage lighting schedules, brightness levels, and control through the Koolmesh mobile app, improving the club’s daily operations.

Quick manual adjustments: The wireless wall switches allow staff to easily make on-the-spot changes to the lighting without relying on the central system, ensuring flexibility during events or unexpected needs.

Carbon neutrality progress: The club has made significant progress toward carbon neutrality and, thanks to the Carbon Trust grant, will see a return on investment in less than a year.
