SUCCESS STORY: RETROFIT LIGHTING SYSTEM FOR MERCEDES-BENZ OF WHITEFIELD SHOWROOM

The Mercedes-Benz of Whitefield showroom faced a pressing challenge: an outdated and unreliable lighting system that left the space without proper control, causing random disruptions and undermining its premium image.

Hytronik’s retrofit solution not only revitalised the system but also introduced smart, scalable controls that respected the showroom’s aesthetic while addressing operational needs.

THE CHALLENGE

This project presented unique challenges, requiring Hytronik to deliver a sophisticated retrofit solution that seamlessly integrated with the existing infrastructure:

• Bypassing a failed DALI system while reusing existing cabling: The previous system had become unusable, leaving the lighting dependent on a basic hand-held device. The retrofit needed to restore functionality without disrupting the current wiring setup.

• Ensuring consistent and reliable lighting performance: The old system caused lights to turn on and off unpredictably, disrupting operations and creating confusion among visitors.

• Providing advanced manual and remote control options: A modern, user-friendly system was required to replace the outdated infra-red device, offering flexibility for both on-site and remote management.

• Delivering a scalable solution for future site-wide integration: The new system had to be expandable, allowing for additional zones to be incorporated without major reworks.

• Adapting to a double-height space: The showroom’s expansive layout required sensors capable of covering greater detection ranges efficiently, ensuring uniform lighting across the area.

THE SOLUTION

1. Highbay PIR sensors:

o Replaced the existing PIR sensors in their original locations, providing motion-based lighting control tailored to the double-height layout of the showroom.

o Offered advanced features such as daylight harvesting and tri-level dimming, optimising lighting according to occupancy and natural light levels.

o Utilised Bluetooth Mesh connectivity, simplifying installation and eliminating the need for additional cabling.

2. EnOcean wireless switches:

o Installed at the main entrance and mezzanine office, these switches enabled manual control without requiring batteries or disruptive wiring.

o Configured for scene selection, dimming, and on/off functions via the Koolmesh app.

3. Gateway:

o Provided remote access and control, enabling the client to monitor and adjust lighting settings through the IoT Koolmesh platform.

o Allowed for the programming of scheduled events, such as the automatic daily lights-off feature at 8 PM.

RESULTS OBTAINED

1. For employees:

o Simplified operations: The new system allowed staff to manage lighting with ease, using wireless switches and remote access to make quick adjustments as needed.

o Increased reliability: Eliminated the unpredictability of the old system, ensuring a consistent and well-lit environment for daily tasks.

o Customisable control: Dividing the showroom into three groups provided flexibility for specific lighting needs across different zones.

2. For visitors:

o Enhanced presentation: The optimised lighting ensured vehicles were showcased in the best possible light, reinforcing the premium image of the brand.

o Comfortable atmosphere: Automated adjustments to lighting levels created a welcoming and professional environment for customers.

3. For the showroom design:

o Seamless integration: The retrofit preserved the clean, modern aesthetic of the space by avoiding intrusive wiring or hardware installations.

o Improved functionality: The ability to control lighting in groups or scenes enhanced the overall design and usability of the showroom.

o Optimised lighting for high ceilings: The new system provided precise motion detection and adaptive lighting adjustments, ensuring consistent and reliable illumination across the showroom’s double-height layout.

4. For Mercedes-Benz:

o Energy savings: Automated features and daylight harvesting optimised energy use, reducing operational costs.

o Future-ready solution: The system’s scalability ensures it can grow with the site’s needs, protecting the investment over time.

o Efficient maintenance: By utilising existing infrastructure and advanced technology, the system reduced the need for complex maintenance.
